I saw this sign whilst I was out. This is an attempt to express my thoughts about it visually.

Drains and Manholes (Part 1)

 Diamond lattice border (Elkington - Patent).

 Two-way chevron columns (Pam - Ductile - Rapide 40 Slideout).

Squares (Wrekin).

 Wide-spaced diamonds.

Linework (Clarksteel).

Narrow-spaced diamonds.

I don't often look at the floor whilst walking, but having a very little dog, makes you notice lots of things. Pieces of conscious design work can be found all around us. These manhole covers are so ubiquitous that they are almost invisible; unnoticeable. They are completely functional, yet decorative; reminding us that they are the result of design. Is this the desperate cry of a manhole cover designer?
